Movie Monday: Ocean's 8 Movie Review

Over the last year we have seen an explosion of strong female casts hit the movie screen. This summer’s break out hit “Ocean’s 8” is no exception.

If you are a cinephile like me, then you have most likely seen the Ocean’s Trilogy starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts. You may have also seen the original, and film classic, Ocean’s Eleven, starring the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, & Peter Lawford). So having those 4 films in the back of my head I walked into the showing of Ocean’s 8 with my mom last night with an open but slightly skeptical mind.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. It stood on it’s own, while still tying itself to the George Clooney trilogy. We even get to see some familiar faces pop up along our journey.

Have you ever seen a heist movie, where as you are leaving you keep trying to understand and work through how everything worked? This movie did that for me. I looked at my mom leaving the theatre saying “That movie makes me want to plan a heist… not actually steal anything but just try and figure out if and how it could be done”.

The cast is brilliant, each leading lady brings her own flair and awesomeness to the screen and their individual characters while still being a cohesive unit – their talent and style have you leaving the theatre totally empowered.

The cameos from the Clooney Ocean Trilogy did not over shadow these ladies either. They were a great nod without taking anything away from the new story.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel to this movie, because these ladies are definitely not done yet, and I can’t wait to see what con these pros will pull next!

I give this movie 5 Stars and 2 big thumbs up – it is a great movie with a familiar yet unique storyline for itself.

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, this is a Summer Must See, and if you have seen it, leave me your thoughts in the comments below – what was your favorite part or character?

As I sign off this review, I want to leave you with one of my favorite things from the original 1960, Rat Pack Ocean’s Eleven. Check out the video below to watch and hear Sammy Davis Jr sing Eee-O-Eleven.

Till next time readers, I’ll see YOU at the Movies 🙂
