Welcome Readers! This is the first Comic Book Edition of What to Read this Weekend! This first comic I am going to review for you, is called Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost #1 written by Ian Edginton with illustrations done by Stjepan Šejić and Patrick Reilly.
Just a note before you read any further, if you are thinking this is going to be anything like the Disney version of Aladdin, it’s not. This comic is a beautifully drawn and the start of an intense telling of not only the story of Aladdin, but with the added twist of including the stories of Sinbad in it.
Set in the mystical city of Shambhalla, we meet Aladdin, a thief, gambler, and lair. Born and raised in a brothel after the death of his mother during childbirth, Aladdin has survived by using his wits, and becoming as he puts it – the best pickpocket in all of Shambhalla.
This comic is a great opener and I can’t wait to read the other parts. This darker and more mature telling of Aladdin’s story is intriguing, and more closely based on the Arabian Nights story.
Ian Edginton does a fantastic job of weaving Aladdin’s story with the story of Sinbad, coupled with the amazing artistry of Stjepan Šejić and Patrick Reilly – this is like Edgar Allan Poe retelling these fairy/fantasy tales of Aladdin and Sinbad.
This first part not only makes me excited to read the rest of the comic series, but it compels me to want to go back and read the original tales of Aladdin and Sinbad!
You can find this comic on Amazon/Comixology**. I highly recommend picking it up and giving it a read!
